## Funding & Acquisitions

- Bengaluru's Mesa School of Business has [closed its Series A at ₹110 crore](https://inc42.com/buzz/mesa-school-bags-%E2%82%B9110-cr-to-launch-new-on-campus-courses/), at a post-money valuation of ₹385 crore, a little above the [₹100 crore it was reported to be raising](https://entrackr.com/exclusive/exclusive-mesa-school-set-to-raise-rs-100-cr-in-series-a-co-founder-may-sell-29-stake-12513921) in September. Dharana Capital and existing backer Elevation Capital co-led ₹85 crore of equity, with the other ₹25 crore coming as venture debt from InnoVen Capital and Alteria Capital. Mesa has no full-time faculty, relying on founders and operators to teach, and says most of its programmes are nearing operational breakeven.

- Nelnet Business Services, a division of US-listed Nelnet, has [acquired Entab Infotech](https://www.investing.com/news/company-news/nelnet-acquires-india-school-management-software-provider-entab-93CH-4932904), the New Delhi company behind the CampusCare school management platform, used by more than 1,000 schools and 1.5 million students across 28 states. Terms weren't disclosed. Entab keeps its brand, its founders and its 290 staff.

- PhysicsWallah's lending arm FinZ Finance has [agreed to sell a ₹95.79 crore loan portfolio to Auxilo Finserve](https://entrackr.com/news/physicswallahs-finz-sells-rs-958-cr-loan-book-to-auxilo-12625624), a substantial part of its total book, according to a stock exchange disclosure. FinZ only started lending in February, and PW had already said it would [route student loans through partner NBFCs](https://entrackr.com/news/physicswallah-rolls-back-lending-plans-shifts-student-financing-to-nbfc-partners-11999932) instead of carrying them all on its own balance sheet. PW's shares rose more than 6% on the day.

- byteXL, which runs tech and AI skills programmes inside engineering colleges mostly in tier 2 and 3 cities, has [raised $9 million in a round led by Elevar Equity](https://entrackr.com/snippets/edtech-startup-bytexl-raises-9-mn-in-funding-round-led-by-elevar-equity-12632385), with Kalaari Capital and the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation returning. - Hyderabad's Bower School of Entrepreneurship has [raised ₹26.8 crore in a pre-Series A](https://india.entrepreneur.com/business-news/bower-school-raises-inr-26-8-cr-in-pre-series-a), after an ₹11.5 crore seed round, and plans to put part of it toward a standalone Hyderabad campus. Founder Pavan Allena earlier built Metamorphosis Edu, which was acquired by BrightCHAMPS, and Bower now runs entrepreneurship programmes for school students, undergraduates, working professionals and founders.

In Dubai, it unveiled [GR8, a "school within a school"](https://www.aninews.in/news/business/gems-education-unveils-gr8-school-a-world-first-fusion-of-ai-teachers-and-industry-experts-reinventing-education20261009123713/) where students learn core subjects at their own pace with AI and get about 90 minutes to two hours of teacher-led classes a day, with a soft launch in January 2027.

- Lighthouse Learning has [partnered with Clifton College](https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/nri/latest-updates/lighthouse-learning-partners-with-uks-clifton-college-to-expand-in-india/articleshow/134734066.cms), giving the 164-year-old Bristol school its first international presence outside the UK. The two will work on knowledge exchange and global exposure for students, covering areas such as leadership and entrepreneurship. Lighthouse, formerly EuroKids International, runs more than 2,000 preschools and 60 K-12 schools, and is behind the roughly [₹1,500 crore deal for Gurugram's Pathways School](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/kkr-backed-lighthouse-to-buy-gurugram-based-pathways-school/articleshow/132300580.cms).

## Policy & Government

### Bihar

- Bihar's science, technology and technical education department has [signed a statement of intent with Google on AI for teachers](https://education.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/government-policies/bihar-partners-with-google-to-train-teachers-in-ai-strengthen-digital-learning/134598025), under which Google has proposed training them through its AI Educator Series, in Hindi and English. Teachers will learn to use Gemini and NotebookLM for lesson planning and admin work, and to treat AI as a tutor "rather than simply as a tool for generating direct answers."

### Himachal Pradesh

- Himachal has [released ₹35.34 crore to upgrade ITIs, polytechnics and engineering colleges](https://education.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/higher-education/hp-govt-releases-rs-35-34-crore-to-strengthen-technical-institutions-minister-rajesh-dharmani/134595510), Technical Education Minister Rajesh Dharmani said, with the biggest single share, ₹5.83 crore, going to ITI Kafota in Sirmaur. Students from the state's technical institutions have also been taken on educational visits to Kazakhstan and Japan.

### Kerala

- Kerala's UDF government is set to [withdraw the LDF's 2025 private universities bill](https://www.newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/2026/Oct/10/kerala-new-private-universities-bill-to-do-away-with-ldfs-govt-nominee-proposal), still awaiting presidential assent, and replace it with one that is likely to drop government nominees on university councils and ease the ₹25 crore corpus and roughly 10-acre land rules. The government is expected to make sure universities still don't get a free run on fees, sources said. The new bill, at a pre-draft stage, will also have to account for the Supreme Court ruling that [private universities cannot be run for profit](https://www.barandbench.com/amp/story/news/litigation/private-universities-cannot-be-run-for-profit-supreme-court-orders-disclosure-of-finances-fees-et-al).

### Telangana

- Only [13.5% of Class 5 students were competent in maths and 8.8% in Telugu](https://urbanacres.in/telanganas-fln-test-reveals-a-deep-primary-learning-crisis/) on Telangana's foundational literacy and numeracy baseline, which tested more than 6.3 lakh children in Classes 2 to 5. Competent meant getting at least 80% of a skill's questions right, and the Class 5 share fell from 67.6% in addition to 16.2% in division. The report doesn't say what the state plans to do about them.

## Financial Reports & Market Trends

- Banning phones in class [improved academic performance in a randomised trial of 16,683 students](https://scienmag.com/massive-classroom-phone-ban-trial-in-india-boosts-learning-for-struggling-students/) at 10 higher education institutions in Odisha, published in Science, with the biggest gains among lower performers and first-year undergraduates. Attendance didn't change, GPA gaps narrowed, and students who lived with the ban became more supportive of it. The effect on high performers, postgraduates and STEM students was minimal.

- More than half of India's five-year-olds, 51%, are [enrolled in primary school rather than pre-primary](https://english.mathrubhumi.com/education/news/india-five-year-olds-primary-school-enrolment-unesco-report-e52gr57r), according to UNESCO's 2026 Global Education Monitoring report, even though NEP 2020 says children should start Class 1 at six. UNESCO says that doesn't mean they all skipped preschool: the share of Class 1 entrants with preschool experience rose from 41% in 2019 to 80% in 2025.

- India has [added 34,840 colleges and 980 universities since 2001](https://theprint.in/india/education/higher-education-capacity-expands-nationwide-but-big-gaps-in-up-bihar-jharkhand-finds-study/3058634/), but a Jetri and Impactica.org report finds Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand furthest behind the size of their young populations. Bihar, which [opened 211 degree colleges in a single day](https://indianexpress.com/article/india/bihar-to-send-100-college-teachers-to-oxford-harvard-for-global-training-211-new-colleges-opened-10878738/) last month, had a higher education enrolment ratio of 17.66% in 2023-24, against about 30% nationally.

- India now has [287 International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, up from 204 five years ago](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/27-to-41-bengaluru-adds-52-more-ib-schools-in-five-years/articleshow/134798874.cms), and Bengaluru's count has grown 52% to 41, second only to Mumbai's 49. Karnataka has just one IB school outside Bengaluru, in Mysuru, and the Association of International Schools of India says a shortage of teachers trained to teach this way is weighing on quality and costs.

## Opinions

- Could an AI copy of a Harvard professor help fix India's teacher shortage? Angshuman Kar, who teaches English at the University of Burdwan, [holds Harvard Business School's $699 AI-avatar bootcamp up against Indian classrooms](https://scroll.in/article/1095778/as-harvard-launches-course-with-ai-professors-what-is-the-future-of-teaching-in-india), from multi-grade rural schools to students learning in Indian languages. He finds a paradox hiding inside Harvard's own experiment. Read it for what he thinks an avatar still can't do.

- Is college still worth it when AI is coming for white-collar work? Former Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein [takes on Peter Thiel's case against college](https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/education/news/college-education-remains-a-route-to-success-despite-ai-threat-to-jobs-says-former-goldman-sachs-ceo-lloyd-blankfein/articleshow/134890719.cms), drawing on his own path from Brooklyn public housing to Harvard at 16. Read it for what he thinks a degree gives you that a skills course doesn't.
