Job aspirants have occupied Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium since July 25 , alleging that recruitment vendor TSR Data Processing Private Limited rigged the JPSC prelims and JSSC-CGL exams, with seats allegedly sold for cash . After six hours of talks on August 9 , the state government agreed to cancel the 14th JPSC preliminary exam and two backlog exams, and all three JPSC members resigned, with ministers claiming they had met 98% of protesters’ demands. It still won’t order a CBI probe into JSSC-CGL specifically, saying it lacks jurisdiction over an exam conducted under court directions. That wasn’t enough for protesters. On August 10, coinciding with Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s 51st birthday, thousands marched on the Assembly , pointing out that only three of the thirteen exams they want scrapped have actually been cancelled, and police answered with water cannons, tear gas and a lathicharge that left several protesters and four policemen injured . Jharkhand’s CID has made 19 arrests so far, including a state employee accused of running a ₹40 crore paper leak racket who had somehow cleared 12 competitive exams himself over the past 13 years, while protest leader Devendra Nath Mahto joined the march by ambulance on the ninth day of a hunger strike that had cost him 10.5 kg, then ruled out further talks after the baton charge. The BJP called a statewide Jharkhand bandh for Tuesday over what it called “police atrocities” against students, weeks after police under its own central government used pellet guns on Delhi’s Jantar Mantar marchers, while state minister Sudivya Kumar shot back that the BJP had “hijacked” the students’ movement.
